since a couple of days I am thinking of architecture again. Ignition were the thoughts of my girlfriend who was wondering about modern buildings that seem to use only materials that can not age. drywalls, metal grids, aluminium, all sorts of strange plastics, flake and particle boards that are “beautiful” and clean used newly but are not able to age or gain patina in any way. the only way to keep the beauty is constant cleaning or by replacing the actual component (seems familiar from somewhere?).
in general I would agree to the point of my girlfriend, but I am a bit more realistic. architecture in most cases (only exemption would be single family houses that are built in individual initative) is simply object of speculation. architecture is built, destroyed, recycled and rebuilt. the building is not the final product but only an assembly of materials that are in constant flow. the important point is not durability but only to keep the “clockwork going”.
I assume that without positive or negative appreciation - I just see it as social matter. of course one could argue about “bugs” within this system - sustainability, energy losses, bad recycling, etc. - but fact is that society at the moment is detecting this faults as new growth markets and therefore will upgrade the system automatically. if the panic about global warming is true, there even is no other way.
to get back to the actual issue, architecture, my hypothesis is the following. technology made it possible for people to stay “young” better than ever before in history. plastic surgery keeps you tight, pills regulate your juices and, if necessary, the “mechanical parts”, hinges and joints of your body, can be repaired like any other machine. new genetic cognitions - of which I don’t know any - not even to mention. this treatment of the body, to me, is also reflected in architecture. aging is nothing worthy anymore. it is negated. so what to do?
maybe just sit back and relax a bit. stop the panic (actually also the name of a great album of luke vibert aka wagon christ). in my opinion “it” is getting better. people (funnily enough rather the young) are beginning more and more to speculate that real youth might not be only enabled by a “working” body.. and popular tv shows are not about tanned life guards in red swimsuits anymore - rather relationally disturbed physicians and lawyers
.. actually also a bit creepy ..

always keep one thing in mind: by wearing a t-shirt, you are able to reach the same amount of people everyday as martin blumenau, namely 3768.
“gyle” has been created as mixture between the german word “geil” (phat) and a second one which I forgot, but which describes the sense that should guide you doing anything.
closefistedness is not cool. keep that in mind. by wearing a “gyle” you can show that to your 3768 every day!

if you should be keen now to call a “gyle” your own, just follow the description provided below:
step1) grab a fatliner
step2) take some old monochrome shirt from your ‘96 collection and
step3) assemble the letters L,G,E and Y the following way directly on it: GYLE
and don’t forget
step4) transfer €50,- to my account, cus it was my idea.
OR
simply order one here. first 3 will get a hand-drawn (=unique) FOR FREE !!!
