salettl bridge
“salettl-bridge” (salettl = viennese for pavillion) is a pedestrian bridge across the barrier handelskai, a street in vienna that is blocking the access to the danube waterside. it is a contribution to the steel trophy student competition.
the task was not only to create a bridge but also to revalue the whole area. since we wanted to keep the bridge open and democtratic we didn’t add any parasitic functions and designed it as a “pavillion bridge”. the ignition to our design became the fact that we had to cross the railway tracks in almost 8m height handicapped accessible. this results in an almost 300m long path that we compressed as much as possible: winded up to a spiral.
the steel pipe construction is divided into arches and ribs, similar to shipconstruction. the corners were connected by diagonals which is giving the structure high capacity. the pathway is hung off-, respectively built on stilts onto the main construction. to allow a direct connection we added a staircase in the middle axis and broadened the path on neuralgic points.
